Market Matters Afternoon Report Thursday 28th April 2016

Good Afternoon everyone

What Mattered Today

A positive lead from overseas – particularly in commodity markets got the ASX off to a good start….even the fall in the AUD overnight to trade around US75c helped to support the miners….but again, the banks lagged and failed to add any index points in aggregate. That was left to the miners with BHP closing up +4.68% to $20.57 and adding an impressive +10pts to the ASX 200. RIO was also up +3.86% to $50.29 adding +2 index points to the broader market.

Currencies drove stocks for a second day with the Bank of Japan seemingly disappointing investors with no additional stimulus, which sent the USD/JPY sharply lower (i.e the JPY sharply higher)….and stocks here got volatile after the move saw selling of Japanese equities.

Still, we managed to claw our way back and closed reasonably well; up +37 points on the session. Volatility is starting to rear its head again, but it seems we’re only just starting to get compensated for the vol in the options market – with the VIX starting to tick marginally higher since early March lows….It’s still low but ticking up….

Pacific Brands (PBG) owner of Bonds copped a takeover bid from Hanes valued at $1.1bn today – and the shares understandably spiked…up +22% to $1.155…

Woolies (WOW) was also strong today….up +3.62% to close at $22.03 after the AFR reports that comments from a Woolworths Liquor executive in regards to the announced namechange of its liquor business to Endeavour Drinks Group has raised interest that the division could be at the initial stage of demerger, IPO or trade sale.
