Trade Idea: Long the BetaShares Uranium ETF (URNM) $7.33

The New York Times reported on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is considering several executive orders to expedite the construction of nuclear power plants. By definition, higher demand will create a tailwind for uranium prices and stocks. We believe Trump will pull this lever as he looks to reduce energy prices, one of his big promises on the campaign trail - remember “Drill baby drill”.

BetaShares Uranium ETF (URNM) $8.82

The ASX uranium miners have proven a minefield for local investors. Paladin and Peninsula both announced disappointing production downgrades in the ramp-up period of their respective projects, and the stocks were slammed accordingly.

Sprott Uranium ETF (URNM US) $US42.08

The URNM ETF closed up +1.6% overnight, a solid 14% above last week's low. However, the muted move overnight suggests another strong session by ASX uranium names is unlikely unless the shorts continue to cover in earnest. Still, we believe buying will resurface into any dips after the price action over the last week. The aggressive decline from Mays high appears over, and the shorts should be nervous.

Chart of the Week

This is not the first time we have looked at uranium this month but after Friday's advance to multi-year highs, we thought it was an important time to clarify our firm opinion, i.e. we are bullish. The URNM ETF closed up another +1.75% on Friday, suggesting another strong day for the local sector today – this ETF follows companies who devote at least 50% of their business to uranium, it currently includes Cameco Corp (CCJ US) 16.1%, Paladin (PDN) 4.7% and Boss Energy (BOE) 4.7%.

Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM US) $US44.03

Overnight, we saw the US-traded Sprott Uranium Miners ETF rally another +3.7%, this ETF’s largest holding is currently Cameco (CCJ US) at 16.6%, while it also holds 4.6% in Paladin (PDN) and a 4.4% position in Boss Energy (BOE). At MM we are bullish on the whole space, for subscribers who prefer investing locally, the ASX listed BetaShares Uranium ETF (URNM) is an excellent alternative, it has very similar exposure in both PDN and BOE.
