SYR is an Australia-based company engaged in the production of natural graphite products from Balama Graphite Operation in Mozambique, which has endured a tough 12-months in line with the weakness across the ESG space in general, i.e. graphite is used in EV batteries. These shares remain in the “naughty corner” along with PLS; around 18% of the stock is held short, and the position has been steadily growing over the last 12 months.
Shaw & Partners hosted a graphite conference last week with a number of companies, including Syrah, presenting the outlook for the commodity and their assets. Graphite is a key battery metal but also has applications across steelmaking, lubricants and brakes to name a few. For this reason, graphite hasn’t quite had the major price rush as lithium despite making up a significant portion of what is now the global standard in batteries used in EVs and energy storage given the portion of supply in the global market being directed this way has been lower than that seen in the lithium market.

Syrah Resources Ltd is a vertically integrated graphite and battery anode material producer. It supplies products for battery and industrial applications. The company operates in three segments: i) Balama: Production, distribution and saleof natural graphite from the Balama Graphite Operation in Mozambique, ii) Vidalia: Production, qualification and sale of AAM from the Vidalia AAM facility, and Corporate: Corporate administration, treasury and investing activities. The majority of revenue is derived from the Balama segment. Geographically, the maximum revenue is derived from Asia (excluding China and India), and the rest from China, Europe, India, the Americas, and Other locations.
