Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (LYC) $13.40

LYC is where most local investors go in the local market for exposure to rare earths. This $13bn established giant of the sector is highly exposed to NdPr (neodymium/praseodymium) prices. In FY25, LYC produced $556mn of revenue with $1.1bn forecast in FY26, but again, this is highly dependent on NdPr prices.

Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (LYC) $17.00

In August, LYC successfully raised $750 million, which involved the issuance of approximately 56.6 million new shares at $13.25 per share, representing a 10% discount at the time.  Not surprisingly, with the stock at $17, there was strong demand for its SPP, and the company has more than doubled it to over $180mn, filling all applications in full.

Valuing LYC is hard, but we’ve witnessed a number of times in 2024 that the strong are getting stronger, and in terms of REE, that’s LYC, especially in a world scarred of being reliant on China for anything. We believe LYC represents good value ~$7, but it's an aggressive play for a $6.6bn business that’s a political hot potato heavily influenced by China.

Lynas Rare Earths Ltd (LYC) $6.45

We have discussed rare earth player LYC several times over recent years, although the stock has never been included in our Active Growth portfolio. The stock and sector have struggled since 2022 in a very similar fashion to lithium, as the NdPr price has been under pressure due to a weak Chinese economy. However, we believe China's economy is improving, which would provide a solid backdrop for Lynas, i.e. LYC’s earnings will follow if/when prices recover, aided by the added capacity on the back of the Malaysia licence deal sealed last October. Also, with ~6.5% of LYC shares being held short, there is plenty of scope for a short covering squeeze higher if corporate action starts to unfold.
