European Equities

We continue to like European stocks through 2025/6, but the region will need to navigate Trump’s tariffs before it can return to business as usual. We have adopted a bullish stance towards the EURO STOXX 50 through 2025, but we have wound this back this morning as the fallout from Liberation Day takes hold. However, the first signs of diminishing trade uncertainty, and we can see ourselves donning our bullish hats again.

European markets closed lower on Wednesday as investors assessed several earnings releases and a hotter-than-expected U.K. inflation print.  The regional STOXX 600 ended the session 0.9% lower, retreating further away from Tuesday’s all-time closing high and marking the index’s biggest daily drop in 2025.

First Up

We are less than halfway into June, and Europe has already elevated volatility across equity markets following a rate cut by the ECB and looming elections in the UK and France, where, in both cases, the incumbent party is in real danger of being ousted. There is an old saying that when the Dow sneezes, the ASX catches a cold; however, in the current market environment, the ASX is far more correlated to European stocks on a day-to-day basis, although, unfortunately, we have been underperforming both regions so far this year.
