Global X Lithium & Battery ETF (LIT US) $US43.28

The lithium anchored ETF  has also bounced ~40% from its 2025 low. Our preferred scenario is that we see a few weeks of consolidation by this ETF, similar to that in May, before another push to new 2025 highs: 41% of this ETF is allocated to Chinese stocks and 20% the US, with Albermarle the largest holding at ~9.2%.

It's amazing to think that Li was as hot two years ago as AI is today; how things change! We see no catalyst to start accumulating the LIT ETF just yet, but a few positive signs are slowly looming on the horizon, and it's worth watching for a turnaround down the track.

Does MM see further M&A opportunities in the lithium sector?

At this stage, local mining giants such as BHP haven’t considered the sector because earnings wouldn’t move the dial on their balance sheet but never say never as the industry evolves i.e. this is unlikely to be a playing field for the large end of town over the next 12 months. However, this remains a hot/active space.

Lithium & Rare Earths find their mojo – How should we play it?

Lithium-ion batteries are not new, they’ve been powering laptops, mobile phone batteries, and even off-grid camping setups for some time, however, it’s the growth in electric vehicles that is driving the demand for this lightweight, high-energy-density input. China is the largest and fastest-growing EV market in the world, however, the growth is slowing. The market more than doubled in 2021 & 2022 while this year it is expected to grow by around 30% - still very solid numbers in a huge market where 25% of all new vehicles sold are EVs. Slower demand this year caused a big decline in prices of raw materials and the stocks that mine them.
