The ASX Healthcare Sector has been looking increasingly strong over recent weeks, with many diverse members such as CSL Ltd (CSL), Cochlear (COH), Sigma Healthcare (SIG), Ansell (ANN), Fisher & Paykel (FPH), Pro Medicus (PME), and even Ramsay Healthcare (RHC) feeling more bullish into the back end of 2024. With investors struggling to find value, with the “Big Four Banks” nudging all-time/multi-year highs, and the Tech Sector already up over +20% year to date, it's not surprising they’ve turned their attention to this old bastion of performance, which is up less than 5% so far this year. Until the Resources Sector latches onto some positive news from China, it is where MM sees some of the best risk/reward opportunities.
Healthcare stocks caught our attention on Wednesday after their +1.3% advance. However, they’ve been a clear laggard in 2024, advancing only +2.1%, while four other sectors have delivered double-digit gains. The potential influence of the new wonder weight loss drug, Ozempic et al., has weighed on a couple of influential ASX names, but with interest rate cuts on the horizon, we question if this underperformance will continue. Another bonus from the sector is its label as a defensive play, a comforting addition to most portfolios with global equities pushing to fresh all-time highs.
The usually stoic Healthcare Sector has been a standout underperformer since June and with the exception of Cochlear (COH) it was a relatively dire August reporting season, unfortunately we feel the current negative sentiment is unlikely to dissipate in the short term.
Arguably the weak link of the MM Flagship Growth Portfolio through 2023 has been our overweight healthcare exposure i.e. we have 13% in the Healthcare Sector which is above the 10% of the broad index. Hence, if we are overweight a sector that’s not delivering results we must reassess, especially after its largest member and the 3rd largest stock on the ASX suffered a rare negative rerating yesterday.

This currency-hedged ETF looks to track the performance of Nasdaq Global, ex-Australia, Healthcare Index and as such holds well-known names such as United Health, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly & Co. and Pfizer inc. The issue we have here is over the last 5/6-monmths our stance has switched from bullish to neutral to bullish hence it’s a definite option to fund other purchases in the weeks ahead.

Healthcare stocks can often be regarded as defensive in nature but like the Tech Sector they are also largely recognised as rate-sensitive growth stocks. Since the outbreak of COVID the DRUG & NDQ ETF’s have moved pretty much in tandem with the tech stocks exhibiting a higher beta to interest rate swings i.e. when bond yields finally correct they are likely to rally harder than their healthcare peers but both should perform well.
MM are switching BetaShares NASDAQ 100 ETF (NDQ) into locally traded BetaShares Global Healthcare ETF (DRUG) as we prefer the healthcare sector over tech due to its more defensive nature.
