Crude oil is finding a base around the $US60 level currently being supported by aggressive rhetoric between the US and Iran. OPEC+ are also on track to pause production increases in March which has helped push Brent futures to a four-month high last week after US President Donald Trump warned Tehran to make a nuclear deal or face military strikes.

Last week, Libya confirmed significant disruptions in its oil output, and the Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced crude oil storage is at an eight-month low. Crude oil is theoretically enjoying tailwinds, with Middle East tensions remaining elevated. However, fears of a global economic slowdown continue to weigh heavily on oil prices, something equities are more relaxed about. At MM, we are never comfortable with a market that cannot rally on supportive news.

Can the Oil Sector live up to its “cheap” label

Crude oil has been supported by major geo-political events since COVID, but it's not delivered an overly exciting performance from the ASX oil & gas names – uranium has been the big winner in the Energy Sector. The supply and demand fundamentals continue to concern some analysts as record U.S. production combined with a weak Chinese economy creates risks of oversupply, potentially offsetting tensions in the Middle East and the Russia/Ukraine war. Brent crude is trading around its average level of the last five years, albeit with some volatile spikes in both directions.

US stocks rallied again overnight with the Energy Sector up almost 5% driving the Dows +327 point gain. We feel the upside bounce by stocks is slowing maturing and the press/pundits will start to quote “sell in May & go away” over the coming weeks, certainly the most comfortable option for investors after the recent uncertainty around the banking crisis.

At this stage we see no reason to fight the downtrend but we are keen on dips into lows – a potential switch vehicle from our US tech exposure through April. • We like the BetaShares Crude Oil ETF (OO) into dips under 4.50.
