• A weak and choppy session today in the ASX 200, opening on its highs of 5,700 and reach its day’s low of 5,640 before ending the day 23 points lower (-0.4%) at 5,674.
• The Banking sector was the weakest link, with Commonwealth Bank (CBA) down 0.8% at $87.37 and Westpac (WBC) down 0.8% at $34.49.
• The Iron Ore sector outperformed the broader market today; BHP Billiton (BHP) rallied 2.2% at $26.49, while Fortescue Metals (FMG) closed 6.2% at $1.89 after trading as high as $1.95 after overnight reports of a Chinese company approaching FMG with regards to taking a stake in the infrastructure assets. This was later washed down in the afternoon with FMG affirming it has yet to be approached by anyone, but is open for discussion.
• Genworth Mortgage (GMA) had a great morning trading on its highs of $3.74 after investors welcomed its first half 2015 yearly report surprising all with a dividend of 12.5c a share and a special dividend of 18.5c a share. The performance of GMA was short lived by the close of market ending unchanged at $3.51.
• In the Energy sector, Origin Energy (ORG) lost 3.6% at $10.61 after announcing a one-off charge of ~$270m after its exit from its stake in Contact Energy (CEN) from New Zealand.
