Your thoughts on a bank stock – Westpac (WBC)

Hello Esteemed Team,

Times have changed. It looks like there will be hefty interest rate cuts this year. Is this likely to lower bank profits? EXCEPT for CBA, the banks have been dividend traps over the last decade and more. You have ‘liked’ WBC in your comments recently. It looks like you see it as a company that can provide SOME growth plus an attractive dividend. I am strongly considering buying it for this reason, but, do not wish to buy it and have it remain stagnant with no growth. I am NOT seeking personal advice. CONSIDERING the recent tariff insanity, I would like to ask you if you still have favourable thoughts about WBC? Are banks in general likely to have a bad time if there is a recession, and IF YOU were to buy WBC what price would you look at getting in and what price would you look at getting out? I realize that no one has a crystal ball. The myriad of variables created by Trump’s attack on the world make it virtually impossible to make a high confidence estimate of probable outcomes. However, I am SURE your calculations would be better founded than my own. Keep up the GREAT work.

Question asked

Takeovers and a shrinking ASX.

Hi

Lately it seems like there is a new takeover offer for a listed ASX company almost every week. Whenever one of these takeovers succeeds it inevitably means that the target gets delisted and the pool of companies to invest in on the ASX gets smaller.

At the moment there doesn’t seem to be a stream of new listings to replace the ones that get taken out – just the occasional new one such as Digico or Gusman y Gomez. Does this mean the ASX could become less attractive as an investment option (especially for the big players)? Does the ASX need to try to attract new listings?

Cheers, Carl

Alibaba (BABA US)

Hi James and team. My first question ever. I would like your take on one of the many threats which are emerging in this escalating trade war between US and China in particular the removal of Chinese listed stocks on the US stock exchange. As investors in the likes of Alibaba and JD.com etc is this something we should particularly worried about and should be taking this threat very seriously? Is it something that the US could implement without much effort and time and if so what would happen to our shares and more importantly the effects it would have on the share price in hong kong

Question asked

Mineral Resources Ltd (MIN)

Dear MM,

Is the fact that MIN’s bonds are now priced at 89c to the $1, i.e. pricing in an 11% prob of default a concern to you? Their quarterly is coming up soon. Do you have any concerns.

Do you know if they are generating enough cash to cover the interest costs etc. Do you think an equity raising is in the wings?

You mentioned you like the risk/reward when it was $14.60 or so. How cheap or expensive is it on an EV/EBITDA basis at spot for Fe and Li?

Thanks,

Young

Staying invested in this unusual time

I am uncomfortable with Market Matters continuing to be so heavily invested and continuing to buy stocks in this volatile time when the market is in a correction with so much uncertainty. Will Market Matters ever consider moving to cash and if so under what circumstances and to what extent?

Question asked

Who’s doing all the selling while the market has a meltdown?

Hi

As I write this the market has fallen in a heap and everything is getting walloped. But, if we assume that most MM subscribers (and other investors who’ve been in markets for a while) are experienced enough to know that now is not the time to panic and sell at any price, and assume that most of the fundies and other professionals are the same, who is actually selling at times like these?

As for me, I’m hanging on for the ride.

Lithium Stocks

Hey there,

Would be great to get your thoughts (again I know) on this sector but in particular LTR vs PLS.

Regards, Michael

Hi, what is your views on Pilbara Minerals and your views on Lithium in general? Would Lithium price will ever recover? And do you see Pilbara good buying opportunity at current prices around $1.30? And if so, what Price Target do you see for Pilbara? Do you think, would that ever achieve $3 ?

Thanks, Brian
