The Match Out: ASX pares losses as softer jobs data lifts rate hopes

Local shares finished marginally lower as a defensive rotation into consumer staples and financials offset a sharp sell-off in miners, technology and data centre stocks, with softer domestic employment data providing some relief on interest rate expectations after hotter-than-expected US inflation reignited rate concerns overnight.

What Matters Today: Glencore (ASX: GLC) debut on the ASX – what may come next?

The ASX 200 was hit -0.6% on Wednesday for no obvious reason, with renewed selling in the banks the main weight, with the financials accounting for more than 70% of the index's decline. However, weakness was broad-based, with over 70% of the main board closing lower, and the miners adding to the market's woes, which unfortunately look set to extend today.

The ASX 200 finished a choppy week up +0.4% with the rate sensitive utilities (+3.6%), real estate (3.6%), healthcare (+3.5%) and consumer discretionary (2.4%) sectors leading the markets gains. Action on the index level was relatively quiet, however, it was anything but on the stock front with 10 stocks falling by more than 10%, for an average decline of mare than 16% while only two stocks rewarded investors with double digit gains - it felt like fund managers were actively tweaking their portfolios as we enter the December quarter.
