Question asked

Appen Ltd (ASX: APX)

Hi James, I have (unfortunately) been a long time shareholder of Appen and should have sold a while ago. I would appreciate your thoughts as I am sitting on quite a large paper loss at the moment and I'm thinking that perhaps it's time to ditch my shares as my patience is running out. However, Appen had their AGM today and the CEO seems very upbeat. The market seemed to react favourably to the comments. I hold Appen within my SMSF which I realise was a big mistake. Is it time to sell? Kind regards, Judy

Answer

Hi Judy,

We only give General Advice at MM so cannot say whether you should sell per se, but we can discuss how we see the stock today.

Appen has frustrated a lot of ASX investors, picking an early local entrant to AI only to see its shares plunge by ~95% since COVID. However, last months trading update saw APX lift 1Q revenue on surging China growth and the company reaffirmed its FY26 outlook, but the stock plunged almost 30% on the day as they flagged weakness in the Appen Global segment — the US-facing business that services the world’s largest tech companies.

On Friday, the CEO did paint an upbeat picture, but CEO’s generally do – they are paid to promote! We have no real insight into Appen, and no real conviction around whether or not the company has a bright future or not, however, technically, the looks ok while it can hold above $1.10. If we had a position here, we’d put some parameters around it. Retain if it can hold above $1.10, and jettison it if it can’t.
