Uranium

Hi guys I like both boe and pdn at these levels and im quite bullish on the uranium theme. My only concern in the short term is that trump seems in the process of doing a peace deal between ukraine and russia and if this eventuates it could see a sell off in these uranium stocks as russia has is a large uranium producer and may re enter the world market increasing supply. Your thoughts please Thanks Tony

Answer

Hi Tony,

We echo your bullish thoughts toward the uranium sector but the markets not listening at this stage, with question marks around AI energy requirements, since the DeepSeek news continuing to weigh on the local stocks, and the Trump/Putin discussions won’t help. However, while Russia is an important part of the nuclear mix, its not as a producer but as an enricher; its only the world’s sixth largest uranium producer but controls about 44% of global uranium enrichment capacity:

  •  The US currently relies on Russia for about 27% of its enriched uranium supply, but this is being phased out over the next four years with the ‘Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act’ which was signed into law by President Biden earlier this year, though we appreciate, it may be repealed.

It is not even clear whether the U.S. has imported any uranium from Russia after the U.S. ban took effect in August. The Russian government’s decree says companies authorised by the export control watchdog can still export uranium to the United States.

  • The latest news is likely to add an additional headwind to stock prices short term but with the likes of BOE & PDN only slipping 1-2% on Thursday when the details surfaced,  illustrates its a blip in a supply/demand driven road.
