Both main local BNPL (buy now pay later) players Afterpay (APT) and Zip (Z1P) have halved from their dizzy heights in Q1 of 2021, this re-valuation might see them come under the microscope of US payments goliath Paypal (PYPL US) who has already made inroads into the space with its “Pay in 4” credit platform. Undoubtedly PYPL can go it alone but a quick step up courtesy of an acquisition shouldn’t be discounted – the US giant could buy Z1P from cash reserves while it would need to raise some cash to take a plunge at APT.
