Champion Iron Ltd (CIA) $5.07

CIA’s key asset is the Bloom Lake mining complex located in northern Quebec Canada. They acquired it in 2016 and restarted production in early 2018,  currently producing around 15Mtpa of high-grade iron (+66% Fe) meaning they attract a higher price than the benchmark 62% Fe. For comparison, Fortescue (FMG) is low grade (57% Fe) and is subject to a discount. i.e. higher Iron content in the ore gets a better price, around ~$US110/Mt at their last quarterly.

Champion Iron Ltd (CIA) $6.23

CIA slipped -3.3% on Monday, extending its decline from early January highs to almost 30%, nearly identical to Fortescue’s' (FMG) performance. However, without the benefit of FMG’s yield, we will unlikely consider CIA in the foreseeable future.

CIA rallied +4.4% on Wednesday, helped by Dalian iron ore futures hitting a five-week high, buoyed by China's additional measures to spur economic growth. The stock has been trading around $6.40 for seven weeks, and although we ultimately believe it will go higher, it's not our pick for exposure to the bulk commodity.

Champion Iron Ltd (CIA) $6.00

CIA fell -4% on Thursday in line with falls by the better-known iron names i.e. FMG-3.4%, RIO -2.5% and BHP -1.5%. This NSW-based exploration company traded ex-div 10c last month but its share price has primarily tracked the iron price over the last few years, until further notice it’s probably our 4th or 5th pick for exposure to the bulk commodity.

The junior player out of the group is still a $3.6bn business today which as a stock has a very similar look and feel to its sector peers. The stock is priced more for relative growth trading on a P/E for 2023 of 13.6x while “only” being forecast to yield 3.2% over the coming 12 months.

Champion Iron (CIA) $4.77

Sydney based iron ore business CIA rallied 3.25% yesterday but it remains well below a number of broker valuations even assuming iron ore stabilises around $US80/MT over the next few years. We feel the risk / reward favours the next 20% being on the upside but no dividend detracts from CIA’s attraction considering the high yielding nature of its peers.

As we said earlier MM is slowly becoming interested in the iron ore names into current market weakness but it feels like they have further to fall e.g. CIA has only corrected 25% of its aggressive rally over the last 12-months, most technical traders would be targeting a 38% or 50% correction before expecting the stock to recommence its bull side advance.
