Arafura Rare Earths Ltd (ARU) $0.145

Arafura (ARU) is a smaller $880mn NT-based rare earths developer, still in the development stage, whose value is centred on its flagship Nolans project in the Northern Territory. Unlike established producers such as Lynas and diversified mineral sands group Iluka, Arafura remains pre-revenue, with its investment case dependent on successfully financing, building and commissioning a single integrated operation. Nolans is designed to mine and process rare earth ore in Australia and produce separated NdPr oxide locally, reducing reliance on China’s dominant processing industry.

  • The project has a planned 38-year mine life and initial annual production capacity of ~4,400 tonnes of NdPr oxide, with potential to expand to 10,000 tonnes. Its phosphate-hosted ore also produces phosphoric acid as a by-product, providing additional revenue that supports the project’s targeted first-quartile cost position.

ARU has secured substantial government and strategic investor support, including backing from Hancock Prospecting, controlled by Gina Rinehart, who holds 17.3% of the company. The project has also secured significant debt and equity commitments, while binding offtake agreements cover the bulk of planned Phase 1 production, with customers including Hyundai, Kia, Siemens Gamesa and Traxys.

Consensus forecasts point to first revenue in FY29 and a profitable contribution by FY30, but those projections depend on Nolans being delivered on schedule, achieving its targeted operating costs and ramping up production successfully. ARU offers exposure to the development of a strategically important Australian rare earths supply chain, but with materially higher execution and financing risk than an established producer such as Lynas; i.e. it’s a high Beta play, as the share price volatility in the last 2 years demonstrates.

  • We can see ARU popping back above 20c, making it an interesting trade, as opposed to an investment stock at the moment.

MM is neutral ARU in the 15c region for now, but it is on our radar as a trading stock
